Introduction of ferrous sulfate:
CAS | 7720-78-7 |
EINECS | 231-753-5 |
Molecular Formula | FeO4S |
HS Code | 28332910 |
Ferrous sulfate is blue-green monoclinic crystal or granule, odorless. Ferrous sulfate weathers in dry air and oxidizes to brown basic iron sulfate in moist air. Ferrous sulfate becomes tetrahydrate at 56.6℃ and monohydrate at 65℃. 100% water soluble. Ferrous sulfate is soluble in water and almost insoluble in ethanol. ferric potassium alum aqueous solution oxidizes slowly in air when cold and oxidizes faster when hot. Adding alkali or exposure to light can accelerate its oxidation. The relative density (d15) of potassium ferric sulfate is 1.897. The median lethal dose (mouse, oral) is 1520mG/kG.

Uses of ferric potassium alum:
1. Ferric potassium alum can be used to make iron salts, iron oxide pigments, mordants, water purifiers, preservatives, disinfectants, etc. ferric potassium alum is used as an anti-anemic drug in medicine.
2. Ferric potassium alum is used for water flocculation purification and removal of phosphates from urban and industrial sewage to prevent eutrophication of water bodies.
3. As a strong reducing agent, ferric potassium alum can reduce hexavalent chromium in chromium wastewater from electroplating plants to trivalent chromium, and potassium ferric sulfate can also replace many heavy metal ions in wastewater.
4. As a flocculant, Ferroin solution has the effects of fast sedimentation speed, large sludge particles, small and dense sludge volume, etc., especially for the sewage of printing and dyeing and textile industries. It has a good decolorization effect.
5. It can generate water-insoluble precipitates with sulfides, phosphates, etc., and then remove sulfides, phosphates, etc.
6. Nutritional supplements and fruit and vegetable coloring agents.
Precautions for Ferroin solution:
Ferroin solution and burnt alum can be used together in pickled eggplant to form a stable complex salt with its pigment, preventing discoloration caused by organic acids. However, we should note that if Ferroin solution is used in large amounts, it will turn into black ink, and if alum is used in large amounts, the pickled eggplant will be too firm. Formula example: 300kg long eggplant, 40kg salt, 100g Ferroin solution, 500g burnt alum. Ferroin solution can also be used as a coloring agent for black beans, sugar-boiled broad beans, kelp, etc. Ferroin solution should not be used for foods containing a lot of tannin to avoid blackening. Potassium ferric sulfate can also be used for sterilization and deodorization, but its sterilization power is extremely weak. The leuco-based pigment contained in beans is colorless in a reduced state, and becomes black when oxidized in alkaline conditions. The reducing property of potassium ferric sulfate can be used to protect the color. The dosage of potassium ferric sulfate is 0.02% to 0.03%.
